Living a life of Simple Abundance

By Mary Yewell

What exactly does living a simply abundant life mean? Cancelling all appointments on your busy calendar to spend time meditating on having harmony in your life? Hiring a contractor with a front loader to clean out all the piles of accumulated stuff that makes up your cluttered environment? Carving out one hour a week to do something that for you and you alone brings you joy? Looking in the mirror at the person you hardly recognize and asking the question, " When was the last time you had a day off?" The answer to these questions could be: Yes, No, Maybe, or an audible sigh.

The daily choices we make and that we allow others to make for us determine the life we live. Today is a day you can choose to start making small changes that will lead you to that simpler and more abundant life. Living a more abundant life begins with daily gratitude. Begin each day with a grateful heart. Take yourself off of autopilot. Take a deep breath and enjoy the smell of your morning coffee, or admire the blue sky as you start your day. Take time to thank the person that held the door for you, helped you accomplish a goal at work, or simply smiled at you in passing. At the end of the day jot down five things that you are grateful for that happened during the day. You will be amazed at how much more aware you are of the abundance that surrounds you. Abundance comes in many forms that have nothing to do with the exchange of money.

The second step is to look at your calendar. Make a conscious choice to make an appointment with yourself for one hour a week. Protect this time at all costs, you deserve it! Then write down five things you have wanted to do for yourself but have not taken the time to do. This does not include chores like taking the dry cleaning to the cleaners, giving the dog a bath, or mowing the lawn. The five things on your list are things that will make you feel good, like getting a haircut, painting your toenails or visiting a museum all by yourself. The five things you have listed are the goals for you to accomplish over the next five weeks during your one hour appointment with yourself. Since it is only an hour, there is no reason for you to pack a bag and go on a guilt trip! Just mark the time on your calendar and keep your commitment to yourself.

The next step is to stop and look around you, what can you do to simplify your environment? Is it time to set new expectations with those that live with you about picking up after themselves? Ask them to help you with making space for the accumulation of things that everyone seems to stumble over in the family room. What needs to stay and where is a home for it? What needs to go because it no longer holds the value it once did? Who would be delighted to have what you no longer need? Sharing your abundance with others is a gift to both the sender and the receiver. You will have less clutter and the new owner will rejoice in having something new to them. Once the space is cleared set the expectation that every time something is taken out, it must be returned to its home before taking out something new. When it's time to leave the room, everything gets put away. Yes, it can happen!

Today is a new day. How will you choose to live a simpler more abundant life?

Mātā Amritanandamayī Devi, or "Amma," is considered one of the great spiritual leaders of the world and is revered as a saint by many. She is a widely respected humanitarian and is known as "the hugging saint" for her tireless hours sharing unconditional love through her embrace.

Satsang means "in the company of truth." It is an opportunity for us to come together to enjoy the Grace of Amma through our social connection and simple spiritual practices. Our program starts with a video or audio clip of Amma's teachings, followed by time-honored chanting of sacred names, singing or simply sitting in the presence of soul-stirring songs (bhajans), hearing readings of Amma's teachings, performing Arati, a beautiful ritual of purification to the Divine Mother, meditating and praying for peace in the exquisite energy and grace generated through the previous activities.

Do you know about the Codex Alimentarius?

Q: I was at a program at the Uptown Theater featuring Brian Clements of the Hippocrates Institute last month and the Codex Alimentarius was mentioned with great emphasis. I’m clueless. What am I supposed to be worried about?

A: You have some homework to do. You also have some emails to send to those that represent you in Washington. Get started with www.healthfreedomusa.org

You will find all the basics of the history of Codex and well written emails you can send directly to your state reps and congress people.

Q: So, what’s the big issue? Why should I be worried?

A: Codex was created in 1962 by the UN as a trade commission to control international trade of foods. Initial intent was good; eventually the pharmaceutical, biotech, pesticide and chemical industries corporate interests took over.

A: What did they do to make this so scary?

Q: Codex is backed by the World Trade Organization. Any country not compliant would lose to a compliant country with a huge economic punishment.

Q: That sounds like a good thing. What’s the problem?

A: Example: the USA has banned the use of 9 toxic pesticides and herbicides which Monsanto is selling to other countries. These countries have signed the World Trade Agreement. They use these toxins on their produce and we MUST allow fair trade. We are buying toxic produce and selling it in our markets. If we don’t, there will be huge sanctions taken against our country.

Q: I get the feeling there is more than just the imports involved in this.

A: Absolutely. Some of the rules of Codex are not sound science. The chairman, Dr. Rolf Grossklaus of Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses believes that nutrition has no role in health. Hmm?! He has declared nutrients to be toxins in 1994 and used toxicology (Risk Assessment) studies to prevent nutrients from having impact on human who take supplements. He also owns the company that does the Risk Assessments for Codex. Conflict of interest?

Q: I’m confused. Risk Assessment is about toxicology. I thought Biochemistry is the study of nutrients and life processes.

A: You are spot on! Codex will allow “junk” science to severely restrict our rights to nutritional supplements if it passes. Supplements of any therapeutic value will become illegal (toxins).

Q: How can this Codex plan be controlling the USA?

A: It’s based on the Napoleonic code rather than common law. This means that, anything not explicitly permitted in forbidden. This plan can ban our supplements by default. (toxins)

Q: When is the deadline to stop this process?

A: December 31, 2009. Action needs to be taken now.

Q: What do you suggest I do for immediate effectiveness?

A: Check www.healthfreedomusa.org. Be a “mouse warrior” Send emails to all your friends to get them mobilized, send emails to your people in Washington and get people together to talk about this. Do something to protect yourself. Educate your representatives, your friends and your community. Please be pro-active.

Starting New Baby with the Best Care Products

Q & A with Gwyneth Jones, HHP

Q: I’m due to deliver my first child the end of January. Will you suggest the best non-toxic shampoos, lotions and hygiene care for me to start with?

A: My guess is you are already attending to your safety and therefore your child’s with the choices you make for your personal hygiene and the products you live with in your home and working environment.

Q: Yes, we are making good choices at home. It’s difficult to control the work space.

A: Continue with your personal decision and do the best to protect yourself in your other life environments. Maybe you can include an air purifier in your personal work space and always have lots of good water to stay well hydrated. Eat the most organic whole foods possible, get plenty of rest and exercise a bit every day.

Q: Thanks for the reminders. What about getting ready for the baby? The baby will require gentler products than I use, I think.

A: The “I think” is the key. You both need gentle products.

Q: What do I look for?

A: Read labels and ALWAYS avoid:

2-Bromo-2 Nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol), BHA ,DMDM Hydantoin, Oxybenzone, Paraben, Fragrance(Phthalates), are a few to watch for.

Q: It seems there is a lot of toxic stuff to watch out for. Can you suggest products to buy?

A: There are many more to be concerned with. Regarding specific products, you need to make your decisions. I will steer you to a very reputable research group where you can compare and contrast the data regarding specific products and their ingredients. You will also find detailed information about the chemicals and the problems they present.

www.EWG.org

Q: It seems you are suggesting I do more than buy good products for my child. What more can I do?

A: Your entire family needs to consider the most healthful environment for all of you. If you are going to paint the baby’s room buy environmentally friendly paint that has little out-gassing. What you breathe now, your baby gets a system full. Consider the furniture and carpets in your home. Your child will be in full contact with these textures, fibers, cleaning products and bacteria.

Q: What do I do about all that?

A: Thoroughly clean the floor surfaces. Shoes Off At the Door. ALWAYS.

Q: What is that all about? Most people don’t want to take their shoes off.

A: Think about this. What have they been stepping in and bringing traces of that in on the soles of their feet?

Q: Ouch! I understand.

A: Set an example. Create the change you want by living that viewpoint.

Q: Do you have any other thoughts on how I can best prepare for my newborn?

A: Eat well (organic, lots of fruits and vegetables), be well rested, enjoy the people you include in your life, listen to music that makes you feel like dancing, singing…joyful. The molecules of your emotions (book by Candice Pert) will bathe your child in what you are living now and once your child arrives.

Q: Thank you for more than I expected.

A: I expect you are expecting a blessing. You will do well. You are looking for and very willing to do the very best you can for all of you. Stay in touch.

On The Breath

“Breathing is sooo important! When I’m driving my kids to school, we practice our breathing – deep belly breathing to calm, alternating nostril breathing to balance, or diaphragmatic breaths for mental clarity.”
- Lee Anne Jester, pilates trainer

“Learning to control the breath is simple and effective. Deep, easy breathing can quickly calm the body's response to stressful situations. Full, complete breath increases oxygen supply to the brain and helps create clear thinking. We all breathe every minute of the day. Why not harness that work to do more
for us?”
- Linda Putthoff, pilates trainer

“Chronic stress is the basis of many physical and emotional difficulties in adulthood. Unhealthy levels of stress create blockages in blood flow and energy, limiting the amazing healing potential of the human body. You can learn to relax while spreading healing energy through your body by simply practicing slow, conscious breathing on a daily basis. Try it now: Slowly and steadily, inhale through your nose so that the breath expands deep into your low belly, like a balloon gently inflating; then, slowly exhale through your nose, making it last as long as the inhale or longer. Repeat several times or for a few minutes. Try sprinkling short “breathing breaks” of several slow breaths throughout your busy day, e.g, upon waking, before eating, before driving, during work breaks, waiting in line, in bed at night, etc. To make it a habit, create a visual reminder, such as writing the word “breathe” on your hand.”
- Becky Holsen, yoga teacher

“Laugh everyday (especially at yourself). Take 15 minutes in the morning and evening to just BE. BREATHE consciously. Be present in everything you do, even if its the laundry or the dishes.”
- Lee Anne Jester, pilates trainer

Craving Some Help with Alcohol Detoxification

Q & A with Gwyneth Jones, HHP

Q: Our daughter came home from college for the Christmas holidays with a serious drinking problem. We, as a family, decided she should stay home until she could get her health and life in order. She has not had any alcohol since mid-December; however, she craves sweets, coffee and is smoking too much. What can be done to help her?

A: Hooray for your family making your daughter’s health your priority with the precious support you offer. Craving sweets and junk food is normal in the attempt to replace all the non-nutrient calories from the alcohol. She probably feels fatigued from depleted vitamins and minerals. Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands giving a false sense of energy. Even one cigarette is too much. A nutritional approach will be great support to speed her physical recovery.

Q: What specifically should we serve?

A: There are several books available addressing the nutritional support your daughter needs. My favorite is “Seven Weeks to Sobriety”. It has tests she can take to determine the food and supplements she will best respond to. The program is used very effectively in a rehabilitation center in Minnesota. The explanations of what to take and why, are user friendly. There are contact numbers in the back of the book if you need assistance. Until you get started on a program, start with water or diluted fruit juices, include fresh produce, lean poultry and fish; eliminate coffee, junk food, dairy and peanut butter. She will do well to take a multi-vitamin/ mineral supplement.

Q: She gets depressed and lonely and doesn’t want to leave the house.

A: If she has not gone to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and committed to working with a sponsor, she is missing a very supportive, understanding, program that is very effective. You will find Al-Anon will be a huge resource for you too. Find a meeting for both of you, same time and same building. Go for a walk together afterwards. Exercise will become an excellent mood elevator and it will replace healthy bio-chemicals in her body.

Q: She complains about body aches. What would be the best pain relief?

A: Massage can be a lovely way to clear the body of toxins and promotes relaxation. She may try acupuncture to speed the recovery time as she detoxifies. Yoga or a meditation practice can be a helpful new activity to ease her body and mind as she embraces healthy new lifestyle. She needs to be participating in a healthy new activity during the time frame when she used to drink the most.

Q: Are there any supplements we should get started with?

A: Do a little research yourself. Check the studies on Kudzu extract.- Alcoholic hamsters were found to have decreased interest in drinking when fed kudzu extract. Generally recommend 3 to 5 grams of root three times per day; some herbal practitioners also suggest that 3 to 4 ml of tincture taken three times per day may also be helpful to reduce alcohol cravings. Also read up on Glutamine to reduce cravings.

Laughter Yoga - No Joke!

Q & A with Gwyneth Jones, HHP

Q: I heard about Laughter Yoga on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Does this really merit doing?

A: Ha! Ha! It’s not a silly question. There are many benefits to participating in a Laughter Yoga session. One value will be enriching your blood with oxygen with controlled and deep breathing. Laughing exercises can increase your lung capacity. Great for people with allergies, frequent upper respiratory infections and emphysema.

Q: I don’t laugh much. How does the teacher make me laugh if I don’t think it’s funny?

A: This is a process that even if you have to FAKE your laugh, you will benefit from the exercises. Simulated laughter exercises aim to develop “joyfulness”. It is a commitment to have fun regardless of all the life problems we are faced with. The brain makes the decision to fake it, the body takes on the physical benefits of when you “do good” you “feel good”. This will change your body chemistry to a healthier state of being.

Q: How can faking laughter reduce my stress load?

A: Studies have shown that laughter helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress-related hormones and causing relaxation. When you increase your oxygen supply, you will increase your stamina. Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s pain-killers, alleviating pain and lifting your spirits.

Q: You are saying this would be good for treating depression?

A: Laughter boosts your serotonin levels, nature’s anti-depressant. Yes, it is an effective antidote for anxiety and depression.

Q: You are saying this is basically done to feel good?

A: Laughter defuses painful emotions like fear, anger and boredom. Therefore, laughter prevents or stops conflicts, reduces tension and helps people see another’s point of view better.

Q: Are you suggesting this be used in corporate settings?

A: Of course! Laughter for team-building, stress reduction, opens up the willingness to make changes. This process gives us a better perspective. Laughter allows us to be more open with one another. It makes us feel safer and less awkward. Laughter breaks the power struggle. It is difficult to stay in conflict when you are laughing.

Q: You call this exercise. How can Laughter Yoga make me more fit?

A: You will have massage to your digestive tract and increase blood supply to all your internal organs. (liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and adrenal glands) The increase in oxygen to your system is aerobic exercise that even sedentary, bedridden or those in wheelchairs can enjoy.

Q: Are there any contra-indications to participating?

A: “No new pain.” One of the rules in Laughter Yoga, is no new pain. Respect your body. If you have physical or mental issues that change for the worse during a session. Any condition that would be at issue with increased abdominal pressure. Yoga teaches that as long as you can comfortably breathe, you’re fine.

Q: There are rules?

A: No New Pain, Fake is Fine, Maintain Eye Contact & Move Around, Refrain From Talking, Be Happy and Energetic.

Q: Where can I enjoy Laughter Yoga sessions?

A: Check www.laughangeles.com for a list of certified instructors in your area and to sign up for a daily yoga exercise. There are 6 new instructors in the KC area. You can enjoy, Free Laughter Yoga on Fridays 6:00 -6:45 p.m. at Plaza Wellspring 4901 Main Street, suite 400. 816-931-6533. There are over 1100 Laughter Yoga Clubs in 180 countries.

What You Don’t Know Could Kill You

...Inflammatory Breast Cancer
by Gwyneth Jones, HHP

Q: I just received a startling email with a video clip about IBC- Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Why have I not heard about this before?

A: It is rare, although IBC diagnosis is becoming more frequent.

Q: What are the symptoms?

A: Any one or more of the following: Sudden swelling, maybe a cup size in a few days. Itching, pink, red or dark colored areas sometimes the texture of orange peel. You may see ridges or thickened areas. The nipple may retract or have some discharge. The breast may warm to the touch. Pain, a dull ache to a sharp pain may be present. You may see change in the areola color. IBC develops in a sheet rather than a lump.

Q: What are the causes of Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

A: Despite its name, inflammatory breast cancer isn't caused by an inflammation or infection. IBC occurs when cancer cells clog the lymph vessels in the skin covering the breast. The blockage causes the red, swollen and dimpled skin that's a classic sign of IBC. However, the cause of the cancer is not yet known.

Q: Where do I get effective screening?

A: Diagnosing inflammatory breast cancer can prove difficult. Often no lump can be felt, and the area of concern may not show up on a mammogram. Additionally, the signs and symptoms can be easily mistaken for a breast infection (mastitis). Thermography is a screening procedure that detects changes in temperature.

Q: Where can I find Thermography screenings?

A: I checked on-line and found these two sites for the Kansas City area. www.kccancercenter.com or www.creativewellnesscenter.com.

Q: How is Inflammatory Breast Cancer treated?

A: This cancer is more aggressive in younger women than other breast cancers. IBC is likely to metastasize to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body before it is detected. If your doctor suspects Inflammatory Breast Cancer, he or she will recommend a biopsy, if confirmed, the next step is to determine how advanced your cancer is. A Chest X-ray, computerized tomography (CT) scan of your chest and abdomen, and bone scan, will but done to check for the presence of metastasis.

Q: How is it treated?

A: A combination of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, hormone therapy and trastuzumab (Herceptin) - all of which have their own potential complications and risks. The key to successful treatment is early detection and prompt treatment. Remember, Inflammatory Breast Cancer is very aggressive and fast moving.

An alternative would be Thermoradiotherapy Treatments. Again I went on-line to find these sites. www.vci.org/inflamma.htm or www.alternativecancertreatmentclinic.com Do your research PLEASE. Choose your treatment wisely, as time is of the essence in successful treatment.

Q: Where can I get more information?

A: There is a lot of information if you will take the time to search. Compare the research and treatment protocols AND the success rates. These sites will get you started.

www.ibcresearch.org – for startling research information www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/inflammatorybreastcancer www.mayoclinic.com/health/inflammatory-breast-cancer

Q: What can I do to prevent this?

A: There is no known cause for IBC at this time. Regular breast checks and wellness check-ups will assure you of your health and well being. Relax, attend to the subtle nuances your body expresses. Keep yourself well informed about all your possibilities in your health care.

Life Lessons of the Transformation Game

by Deedre Diemer, MA

The longer I’m alive on this planet the more I experience that there really is very little “new” information out there; it’s mostly recycled information from the collective unconscious being packaged differently. The messengers and manner in which the message is delivered changes over time to reach a new audience. And that’s great news!!

I started my conscious spiritual journey back in the 80’s, in California, where you couldn’t turn the corner without running into some new personal growth and development program. I experienced as many as I could!! During one particular leg of my journey, I was introduced to a beautiful, extremely powerful board game: The Transformation Game. Every thing I needed to know was revealed in that very simple, insightful game created by two extraordinary women at the Findhorn Institute in Scotland. Over the years (at least 25…yikes!) I played that game numerous times myself and have had the honor of facilitating it with others.

I’m always amazed and inspired by the insights gained and the transformation I’ve witnessed during the course of the game and afterwards as participants embark on their “next steps”. Here’s a sampling of the “truths” from the game that apply to everyday life - Enjoy!

If, our life’s purpose on this planet is to awaken through awareness then that is the KEY tool you’ll take with you when you play the Transformation Game;

Awareness Transforms Pain:
Pain happens. Eckart Tolle explains that we all have a pain body that attracts pain, drama, chaos, etc. That’s neither “good” nor “bad”, it just “is”. The simple awareness that we have a pain body that goes dormant for awhile and then gets “hungry” for some pain is enough awareness to transform the way we live our lives. In the game, when you take on pain your ability to move forward is impeded; oftentimes frozen until you gain enough “awareness tokens” to remove the pain. Then you can move freely along your path. One awareness removes one pain. Simple. Isn’t that like life? Gain the awareness of what triggered the pain, release the judgment we may have placed on ourselves about the pain, bring in forgiveness for the judgment, accept that pain sometimes happens and allow ourselves to feel, without resistance, the pain. It, too, shall pass and the ability to move forward, free of pain will return.

Life is Filled with Insights and Setbacks:
That’s just part of the journey. We encounter “obstacles” along our path, sometimes labeling them as “setbacks”. These are times when we are forced to slow down, reflect upon our part in creating the situation and from a place of neutrality determine what right action is. It’s not the setback that matters, its how we are while we’re experiencing the setback. How are we “showing up” while experiencing the perceived setback? Are we kind and gentle with ourselves or are we stubbornly attempting to work our will and control the outcome? Are we using the experiences as a learning opportunity or placing blame on others? At the same time we experience ‘setback” we also have the opportunity to experience “insights” which can transform any situation that we find ourselves in. With that insight, a perceived setback can be transformed into a healing and growth opportunity. We gain the clarity needed to discern what action, if any, is required.

Awareness is Experienced on All Levels:
We are whole, multi-dimensional human beings on this planet. As such, we experience life on many levels: namely the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual realms. We are constantly evolving on each level. One person may experience a multitude of struggles on the physical and emotional levels (health, survival, troubled relationships, etc) and yet be masterful on the mental and spiritual levels; just cruising along those paths. We are each on our own unique journey of healing, awareness and awakening. There is no competition, no race to see who finishes first as we all have our own “issues” that we have chosen to deal with this lifetime. Remember, we are here to awaken; to gain awareness and thus raise our consciousness!

We Have the Ability to Tap into Our Inner Wisdom at Any Time:
Divine guidance comes in many shapes and forms; it’s just a matter of recognizing it when it shows up. Again, it boils down to “awareness”! The Universe is always communicating with us. Are we listening? Are we open to the guidance that is readily available to us? The messages are there for us; in nature, in dreams, inspirational books, etc.: that snippet of conversation you overheard that happened to pertain to what your current challenge is; the book that opens to a page that inspires you, the song on the radio, or the meaning of encountering a certain animal that you don’t usually see. (Animal medicine is very powerful- Ted Andrews is a master) In the Transformation Game, the divine guidance comes in the form of Angel Cards; little cards that have a spiritual quality written on it. When you receive an Angel Card, you take a moment to reflect upon what that quality means to you and how it applies to the situation (your game’s playing focus); then you embrace the quality allowing it to guide you along the path.

In fact all players pick a Guardian Angel to watch over and guide them through the game. Don’t most of us believe in Guardian Angels in some form and experience a sense of Divine guidance, inspiration and protection at different times in our lives?

Miracles Do Happen:
The miraculous healing, sudden change of fortune; the unexplainable events that occur in life that can only be labeled as miracles that transform us; allowing us to reach a higher level of consciousness, understanding and awareness. Life is full of miracles; big and small.

Being of Service:
In the game, you can’t move up to the next level of consciousness until you’ve been of service. You can have all the awareness in the world, numerous angels and spiritual qualities, transformed your setbacks into insights, be free of pain; yet if you have not been of service to a fellow human being, you remain stuck on that level of awareness.

We are here to be of service to each other, our planet (Mother Earth) and all of her living creatures. We are not separate. We are one.

Blessings and Appreciation:
Life is filled with sweetness when we allow the blessings to flow. We bless ourselves and others when we appreciate the present moment. What ever we are doing, whether it’s mopping the floor, driving in traffic or hugging our loved one; if we can do the task mindfully, with an attitude of gratitude we are a blessing to the world.

You are a blessing to the world!

Remember, we are simply Divine Beings having a Human Experience on this Planet, so please be gentle with yourselves as you travel your own unique path to enlightenment.

Deedre Diemer will be facilitating the Transformation Game on Saturday, September 27th at 1pm. Call 816-931-6533 to reserve your spot - space is limited.

Safe Drinking Water

Q & A with Gwyneth

Funneling Through the Facts Regarding Safe Drinking Water

Q: I've been drinking tap water for years and recently started drinking bottled water. It's very expensive, so I've been looking into buying a filter for my kitchen sink. What is the best choice?
A: I'm glad to hear you are planning to save your health, your money and our planet. Where is "away" when you throw away all those empty bottles? Home filtered water offers higher quality water, at a fraction of the cost. You may consider a whole house filter or one for your shower as well.

Q: Why filter the whole house?
A: If you don't filter the water you bathe in, you may be subjecting yourself to chlorine, arsenic, fluoride, hexavalent chromium, lead, bacteria, viruses, nitrates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and/or whatever particulate matter is in the water you don't want to drink. At least, get a point of use filter for the shower/tub and bathroom sink.

Q: What do I look for?
A: Compare the initial price of the unit, replacement filters, cost of use per/month. How often does the filter need to be replaced? Does the unit require electricity? Does it need to be back flushed periodically? What does it remove? How fast does it filter what quantity of water? Has it been certified?

Q: There's a lot more involved than I thought. There are so many brands I see. I thought this would be easier.
A: Check with the California Department of Health Certificate of Claims to determine credibility and performance. The certificate means the company has provided extensive laboratory test data for each contaminant removal claim. It also means the company's literature, web-site and packaging have been reviewed to contain no false or exaggerated claims. www.cdph.ca.gov/certific/device/Documents/WTD-2007Directory for listings of certified devices by company, alphabetically, by type of device and by contaminants filtered.

Q: I have also seen several water purification systems that have additional features to the filtration. Which ones really make an important difference in the quality?
A: UV light, ionization, oxygenation, distillation and or reverse osmosis are some of the features that are available. They add expense, sometimes lengthy production time or limited quantity. However, they may be worth investigating depending on the water quality issues you may be concerned with in your community water or the plumbing in your home.

Q: Distillation is as pure as water can get. That sounds like the best bet.
A: Yes and no. Distilled water is the steam that is returned to liquid form through condensation. Many people then add minerals to the water to enhance the flavor and nutritional value. It takes a long time to produce a large quantity, however many choose it for cooking and drinking point of use.

Q: Where can I find more reliable information for product comparison?
A: Several great sites: www.waterfiltercomparisons.com provides charts and good links to other sites. www.nrdc.org/water/default.asp Natural Resources Defense Council provides valuable information about tap water.

It IS Easy Going Green!

Q & A with Gwyneth Jones - It IS Easy Going Green

As seen in KC Wellness Magazine, March 2008
(below the article are some green recipes!)

Q: I've already made some eco-friendly changes in my lifestyle. What suggestions do you have that can more me further?

A: What have you embraced so far?

Q: I have started with a water filter and bring drinking water with me every day. I also bring a canvas bag to the grocery to save bags. The CFL (compact fluorescent light) light bulbs are truly saving my electric bill, I turn down the thermostat when I'm at work and when I go to sleep. I use the recycling bin on trash day.

A: Use bio-degradable trash bags available at www.Biobagusa.com and www.returntogreen .

Q: What can I do next, something personal, that will make a difference?

A: Eat more vegetables and less meat. Each calorie of animal protein requires 78 calories of fossil fuels to produce. Irrigation associated with livestock production (including feeds) equals half of all the consumed water in the United States.

Q: I have been eating more fruits and vegetables. Thanks for the encouragement.

A: Are you buying locally grown produce?

Q: I'm not sure. I go to my local health food market for produce.

A: Check CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) www.goodnatured.net for pick up sites nearest you. You will find fresh, local greens and more all year through www.SquashBlossomKC.org or steve@squashblossomkc.org Hen House Grocery Stores and Green Acres Market support CSA.

Q: I've been buying eco friendly cleaning products at my health food store. Are there other products you will suggest?

A: Locally, we have two companies to check with their product lines.

www.foodforlife.com is creating household and personal cleaning products as well as an organic grocery, vegan café, a bakery and a wellness center. Look into www.returntogreen a Lee's Summit business with a wide variety of eco-friendly offerings as well.

Q: I wish all the boxes and packaging were bio-degradable.

A: There are some personal hygiene products company Pangea, creating bio-degradable packaging that you can plant and grow herbs. How creative is that? www.Pangeaorganics.com available at the World Market in Westport.

Q: Will you tell me about local groups or newsletters that can keep me informed?

A: KC has a new magazine, Greenability. "Living well, by living green in Kansas City" is there motto. www.greenabilitymagazine.com for subscriptions.

Q: I've noticed new fabrics for clothing lately. Are they really comfortable and affordable?

A: I bought a very soft, warm beautiful, bamboo fiber throw last month that was reasonably priced and joyfully more than I hoped for. The green movement is making available many new fabrics that are becoming more affordable. Wear organic and natural fibers, more comfortable through all our seasons. Choose to send one or more clothing items to your favorite charity for a new life, for every new item you buy. Recycle.

Q: Thanx for the suggestions. They will be interesting to investigate and add to what I already do. More to come?

A: There is always more to improve on. Stay in touch.

Ten Good Reasons To Laugh For No Reason

Ten Good Reasons To Laugh For No Reason

by Dr. Sebastien Gendry

1. Laughter is a stress buster -- It reduces the levels of stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol.

2. Laughter strengthens the immune system -- The immune system is important in maintaining good health by keeping infections, allergies and cancers at bay: Recent research into the effects of laughter by Dr. Lee S. Berk, Professor at Loma Linda University, California, USA, demonstrates that laughter will increase the count of natural killer cells (NK cells - a type of white cell) and antibody levels. Laughter therapy helps to increase antibodies (Immunoglobulin A) in the mucous of the nose and respiratory passages.

3. Laughter is anti-aging -- It tones facial muscles and expressions. Laughter causes an increase in blood supply to the face, which is why some people look flushed. This nourishes the skin and makes it glow. People look younger and more fun when they laugh!

4. Laughter is aerobic exercise -- Laughter stimulates heart and blood circulation and is equivalent to any other standard aerobic exercise. Dr. William Fry, Standford University, USA claims one minute of laughter is equal to 10 minutes on the rowing machine. The singular benefit almost everybody derives is a sense of well-being because more oxygen is taken in during laughter. It is an exercise regime suitable for all, including people confined to a bed or a wheelchair.

5. Laughter is internal jogging -- Laughter massages internal organs by enhancing the blood supply and increasing their efficiency. This is especially good for proper bowel movement. Laughter exercises the abdominal muscles and helps to improve muscle tone.

6. Laughter is a Natural Pain Killer -- Laughter increases the levels of endorphins – the body’s natural pain killers. Norman Cousins, an American journalist who was suffering from an incurable disease of the spine, benefited from laughter therapy in a situation when all painkillers were ineffective. Endorphins released as a result of laughter may help in reducing the intensity of pain in those suffering from arthritis, spondylitis and muscular spasms of the body.

7. Laughter can control high blood pressure -- Laughter helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress-related hormones. Experiments have demonstrated that a 10-minute laughter session leads to a reduction of 10-20 mm in blood pressure. This however does not mean that patients taking 2-3 tablets for blood pressure every day will be completely cured.

8. Laughter can help dump depression and anxiety -- The stress and strain of modern life takes a heavy toll on the human mind and body. Laughter Yoga can help you get better sleep and reduced depression. Some people claim they can manage without prescribed anti-depressant pills and tranquillizers.

9. Laughter Alleviates Bronchitis and Asthma -- Laughter improves lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. Laughter Club members report a marked reduction in the frequency of asthma attacks.

10. Laughter just makes you feel good -- Laugh and the world laughs with you. How you react to life is up to you. Live life laughing!

Dr. Sebastien Gendry, founder of the American School of Laughter Yoga and the Laugh Angeles Foundation, will be holding an evening of laughter yoga at Plaza Wellspring on Friday, May 23 from 7:30-9:00pm, $20/person pre-registration. Following is a teacher training program from Saturday May 24 to Sunday May 25. Plaza Wellspring is located at 49th and Main Street in the US Bank building. Living in Harmony by Shani Enns

As seen in KC Wellness Magazine, March 2008.

LIVING GREEN
LIVING IN HARMONY
By Shani Enns

Green living is living in harmony with others and the world, but is it possible to achieve harmony outside of ourselves if we have not created harmony within? Although every effort counts and moves us toward that goal, I believe the answer is no.

The world is our reflection, both individually and collectively. As a collective, we have created what we see outside ourselves. We are at war outside because there is war raging within. We not only feel warring energies within in the form of rage, anger, sadness, confusion, and apathy, but there is war right on our streets, and sometimes even in our homes. Parents yelling at children. Children yelling at one another. Red, yellow, brown, and white gunning one another down in the streets and schools. Dragging oneself everyday to a job that sucks the joy out of life. All of these things are mirrors for us, wake-up calls if you will, urging us to look within and make different choices.

And then there is the stuff we feed ourselves, and I don't just mean food. The vast majority of Americans come home from work or school and turn on their television sets. We feed our minds with sound bites. We feed our emotional addictions with fear – color-codes for whether or not it's safe to fly today (terrorism), or news that McDonalds profit margin didn't increase for the first month in 5 years (recession), and even with advertisements that show so-called beauty and perfection beyond what is actually humanly possible. It's an addiction for many. The most popular programming feeds our deepest fears in both gross and subtle ways, telling us we are neither safe nor good enough, but we might feel better if we ate this kind of food, drove this kind of car, wore these types of clothing, or saw some magic number on the scales. According to television, there is almost no problem consumerism can't solve. The truth is that the only place we can ever hope to find peace, joy, and harmony is within. If we cannot see these things within ourselves, how will we recognize them in our neighbors? How can we live in harmony as a global citizen if we are not even able to create harmony in our own lives? So how do we do that? The answer is very simple but may not always be easy because it asks us to challenge every thought, every belief, every pattern and habit we have. The answer is choosing love over fear to transform our world from the inside out.

When we become peaceful within, we will broadcast peace by our very presence. When we can look upon our own shortcomings with love, then we can begin to see our neighbors, both local and global, with compassion. When we recognize our fear, pain, and suffering and how we are contributing to it ourselves, we can begin to make different choices. We can begin to manifest a life of great joy. Begin to ask yourself this question: Am I choosing to be in a state of love or fear in this moment? Then consciously choose love.

Holisitic Parenting Tips

As seen in KC Wellness Magazine, March 2008.

“’Catch’ your kids doing something good. When my kids were little, I would say, ‘I know something good about you!’, and it would make them very happy.” – Shani Enns, energy worker

“Take even just 15 minutes of each day of just YOU time... time to relax, de-stress, pamper yourself and regain your center: whether it's through breathing, dancing, singing, soaking in a warm bath or standing outside and gazing at the beautiful sky... and return to that wonderful centered, neutral place of compassionate detachment. Remember, our children are our teachers as much or even more than we are theirs.” – Deedre Diemer, author

“Breathing is sooo important! When I’m driving my kids to school, we practice our breathing – deep belly breathing to calm, alternating nostril breathing to balance, or diaphragmatic breaths for mental clarity.” – Lee Anne Jester, Pilates instructor

"Don't force your child to finish meals or foods. This damages the ability to stop eating when you've had enough. Instead provide a variety of healthy foods and model eating healthy foods. When provided with good options and a healthy food environment a child will eat intuitively and they will not deprive themselves." – Skye Howard, nutritional counselor

“Children come fully equipped with their own innate intelligence. We can help guide them into an experience of that intelligence by creating space and time for creative exploration and expression.” – Linda Putthoff, Pilates and Yoga instructor

“If your child shows curiosity toward any of your health-related activities, let him or her sample some of the activity with you. If they ask about why you walk for exercise, practice yoga, or meditate, don’t just tell them why – invite them to join you for a short session. Avoid pressuring them; instead, let their natural curiosity be the guide. Even if they soon lose interest, the experience will leave a positive imprint.” – Becky Holsen, Yoga for Kids teacher
